National Roofing Certifications
We all need a good roof over our heads, so the people who build and maintain roofing systems need to know what they’re doing. Many states require roofers to be licensed. Others simply require proof of insurance coverage to back up that essential work.
There are 168,100 roofers nationwide, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The national number is projected to grow 6% by 2033, adding more than 13,000 of these skilled workers to the ranks, according to CareerOneStop, the U.S. Department of Labor’s job search website.
If you’re thinking about starting a roofing contracting business or you want a job in the roofing industry, you need to know the requirements and licensing process in your state or local jurisdiction. This guide will help you determine what you need to get started in the state of Rhode Island.
Roofing License Requirements in Rhode Island
At the state level, Rhode Island requires any person (including subcontractors) who works under one contract where labor, materials, and all other items exceed $500 to register as a contractor.
According to the Rhode Island Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board (RICRLB), “Rhode Island law requires that any person or entity in the business of residential and/or commercial construction, including alterations, remodeling, or repairs be registered with the Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board.”
To qualify for a Contractor Registration, you need to complete a 5-hour pre-education course, obtain a business ID, a certificate of liability insurance of at least $500,000, and workers’ compensation insurance.
Rhode Island also offers a Commercial Roofing License for commercial or industrial roofing projects consisting of four4 dwellings or more.
To qualify for a Commercial Roofers license, you need to pass an examination via PSI, complete a safety course via OSHA, and obtain an insurance certificate in the amount of $2,000,000 per occurrence.
Additionally, Rhode Island licenses specific trades, including plumbers, electricians, underground utility contractors, and more. Trade licenses typically have more stringent rules and often require two2 to four4 years of experience to qualify for licensure.
