Housecall Pro vs. FieldEdge vs. ServiceTitan: Comparing 3 Top Field Service Management Software Products

For service businesses that want to streamline operations, grow their business, or maximize their profits, choosing the right field service management software (FSM) is a crucial decision. These holistic, all-in-one platforms become the foundation of running nearly every element of your business.

Ideally, you want to get this decision right the first time. Transferring all of your business data into a different platform and having your entire staff learn how to use a new software system can be a time-consuming and challenging process.

With that said, it can be difficult to figure out which software product would be best for you. Most solutions list many of the same features, so it often isn’t clear which one would best suit your business needs.

So, to help service business owners make an educated decision, in this post we’re going to explain the key differences between our product, ServiceTitan, and two other popular field service software solutions: Housecall Pro and FieldEdge.

Specifically, we’ll cover:

ServiceTitan specializes in helping HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other service industry businesses to streamline operations and grow profits. 2 High-Level Differences Between Housecall Pro, FieldEdge, and ServiceTitan

Housecall Pro, FieldEdge, and ServiceTitan each offer comprehensive sets of features to help field service companies with key business processes such as:

However, there are two overarching differences between ServiceTitan and our competitors Housecall Pro and FieldEdge:

  1. The latter two services are solid tools for basic job management tasks like scheduling and dispatching, but they either lack or have limited functionality for some of the key tools service businesses need to be successful.

  2. While Housecall Pro and FieldEdge technically serve both residential and commercial service businesses, historically their products have been more focused on helping businesses serve residential customers. In contrast, ServiceTitan offers robust functionality for both commercial and home service businesses.

Below we’ll discuss specific examples to demonstrate both of these differences. However, we have written previous in-depth posts on how we measure up to each of these competitors based on these two factors, which we encourage you to check out here:

In-Depth Housecall Pro vs. ServiceTitan Comparisons

In-Depth FieldEdge vs. ServiceTitan Comparisons

Throughout the rest of this post we’ll summarize some of the differences discussed in those previous comparisons.

First, we’ll provide examples that demonstrate how ServiceTitan is better designed to support residential-focused service businesses. Then we’ll walk through examples of how we can better support commercial-focused service businesses.

Examples of How ServiceTitan Better Serves Residential Service Businesses

Example #1: Greater Workflow Efficiency For Essential Business Processes

Book Jobs More Seamlessly While Providing Better Customer Experiences

ServiceTitan’s intuitive call booking workflow goes above and beyond most FSMs to equip Customer service reps with the details they need to book jobs faster, convert at a higher rate, and provide better customer experiences.

ServiceTitan allows CSRs to see who’s calling in before they pick up the line. This enables them to greet existing or previous customers by name, impressing them and making them feel like the valued customers they are.

When an existing customer calls in, CSRs can view their customer information and find detailed job histories right from the call booking screen. This is a marked difference from other FSMs. For example, FieldEdge users need to navigate to other parts of their system to find membership or service agreement information, which makes for a less efficient user experience for CSRs, and causes delays on calls that can be off-putting to customers.

In addition, our call booking screen guides CSRs through a series of intuitive fields and drop-down menus to ensure they ask the right questions and don’t miss crucial details. And it also enables CSRs to schedule jobs from the same screen (another step that users of other software generally have to do in other parts of the system).

Automate and Optimize Your Scheduling For Max Profitability

While both FieldEdge and Housecall Pro have job scheduling features, ServiceTitan has unique functionality called Advanced Capacity Planning that allows service business owners to define, automate, and implement a capacity planning strategy that optimizes their schedules for profitability.

For example, they may set rules to increase capacity for maintenance agreement visits during slow seasons, or decrease those visits during busy seasons, reserving more tech availability for higher-ticket jobs (e.g. emergency service and repair, system replacements, etc.).

While many service contractors would prefer their CSRs to schedule jobs with these factors in mind, it’s often difficult for CSRs to execute this in practice. They’re already juggling a lot on the fly.

But with ServiceTitan Advanced Capacity Planning, when CSRs select a certain job type during the booking process, they’ll only see availability based on the strategy you’ve defined. Your strategy is implemented without CSRs even needing to think about it.

This can have an immense impact on profitability, and this feature isn’t currently available with FieldEdge or Housecall Pro. To implement such strategies, CSRs need to use their memories and other parts of the system, which makes this process more challenging (and less likely to happen).

Example #2: Greater Clarity and Customizability of Essential Reporting Data

While both Housecall Pro and FieldEdge offer reporting capabilities, ServiceTitan’s reporting features are more flexible and advanced. Specifically, we offer:

  1. Greater customizability: ServiceTitan reports are more customizable. For example, if you want the flexibility to create really specific reports—like a scorecard for a single technician working on a specific business unit in a specific area—you have the power to do so with ServiceTitan.

  2. Greater drill-down capabilities: ServiceTitan allows businesses to drill down into their reports and identify exactly where the information is coming from. Users can click on any metric being reported, and trace it all the way back to the specific job, technician, etc. This is not the case with most other FSMs.

In addition, ServiceTitan’s robust reporting features come with a base subscription to our product, whereas FieldEdge, for example, charges more for certain report features. Only FieldEdge Premier members are able to save report views (with a limit of 10 custom reports per database). ServiceTitan does not have these limitations.

For contractors looking to grow their residential service businesses, granular reporting can make a massive impact on your ability to spot issues and opportunities that either limit or support business efficiency and growth. If you want greater visibility and control over your business, ServiceTitan reporting can offer that in a more robust way.

The features we’ve discussed throughout this section are just some of the examples of areas where ServiceTitan offers deeper capabilities for residential service businesses than Housecall Pro and FieldEdge.

Examples of How ServiceTitan Better Serves Commercial Service Businesses

Example #1: Easily Create Client-Specific Pricing

ServiceTitan has built-in features for offering customer-specific pricing to commercial customers. For example, if you want to offer special rates to a particular chain of big-box stores or restaurants you’re working with, you can create custom rules for pricing and markups for that specific customer.

In most FSMs, including FieldEdge and Housecall Pro, creating customer-specific pricing requires manual processes and workarounds to set up. For example, you may have to export your pricebook to create these options or changes, and re-import it to your system to offer client-specific pricing. This can be time-consuming for your staff, particularly if you work with a lot of commercial customers.

Example #2: Manage Inventory Without the Need to Bounce to Other Platforms

At this time, Housecall Pro does not offer built-in features for inventory management. Most of their users use QuickBooks Online to manage their inventory. If you have a material added as a price list item in Housecall Pro, you will be able to account for this in QuickBooks Online when the invoice with the material included is sent over.

And while FieldEdge  technically offers inventory management, you need to bounce back and forth between their platform and QuickBooks to view and manage your inventory.

The consequence of this in both cases is a decrease in workflow efficiency, and the need for users to have equal competency and familiarity with both platforms and the ways they work together.

In contrast, with ServiceTitan’s built-in inventory features, you can manage your inventory directly within our platform. This helps to further streamline your workflows and ensure inventory is always accurate and up-to-date.

Appointed staff can access and leverage a suite of tools to optimize inventory and purchase order management, including:

  • Inventory Overview: At a glance, users can view all items that they’ve added to track with ServiceTitan inventory. For each inventory item, this view displays an item name, code, description, along with quantities available, on hold, on order, and on hand, plus the average cost per unit and total value of the stock. You can see big-picture numbers, such as total inventory valuation and total number of items. Or you can drill down into individual inventory items for further detail.

  • Replenishment: To track equipment and materials in your trucks and warehouse, our replenishment feature automatically updates to reflect the number of items needed in a given location. As items are added to invoices or purchase orders, these are automatically reflected in your inventory data. And users can be prompted to replenish to maintain necessary inventory.

  • Purchase Orders: Users can initiate the requisition of equipment and materials for jobs right from within the estimate screen. They can then create and send purchase orders to the appropriate vendors, and track those orders through fulfillment. Inventory data automatically updates to reflect all POs.

  • And more: This feature set also includes workflows for managing adjustments, returns, warranty parts tracking, and more.

ServiceTitan’s built-in inventory management is demonstrative of an important, broader point of differentiation between our product and our competitors: We build more of our features natively into our platform and rely on fewer third-party vendors and integrations. This allows us to provide greater overall ease of use to businesses by letting them manage more of their business operations from within a single platform.

Example #3: A Suite of Features For Job Costing and Project Management

Commercial jobs are often more complex and take more time than short-term residential service work, so they require a different set of tools for job costing and managing projects.

Specifically, it’s essential to have a real-time view of project financials as you progress through a job. Otherwise, you can easily lose control of your costs, and end up not making any profit—or worse, finishing a job in the red.

With ServiceTitan, commercial service businesses can view their project financials in real time via the project page. For every key project, they can view a set of financial tables including:

  • Project Summary: An overview table containing the high-level details of their project, such as the amounts and percentages completed of their contract sum, expenses, cost to complete, total earned, total retainage, total invoiced, etc.

  • Budget vs. Actual: An in-depth look at budgeted versus actual expenses, including the variance and percentage of the budget used.

Expense Details: A detailed breakdown of all expenses for the project, and the ability to drill down into individual line items to track expenses at a granular level.

These tables are updated automatically throughout the project as expenses occur, work is completed, invoices are received, etc.

From this same page, contractors can take a variety of key actions that include building estimates, adding invoices or applications for payment, requisitioning equipment and materials, and more.

With these features, commercial service businesses have both a high-level and granular view of their most significant projects, allowing them to maximize efficiency while maintaining profitability.

At present, while FieldEdge offers some project-management capabilities, they don’t currently offer the equivalent of ServiceTitan’s project-tracking page. Neither does Housecall Pro.

Example #4: Advanced Form Capabilities for Improved Accountability and Workflows

Compared to FieldEdge and Housecall Pro, ServiceTitan has a number of features that offer greater flexibility and efficiency when it comes to form management. For example:

  • Ability to Upload PDF Forms:ServiceTitan users can upload PDF forms that were created outside of ServiceTitan, and then host and use them in our platform.

  • Easily Duplicate Forms: If a technician needs to complete multiple copies of the same form for a job, they don’t need to re-create the same document multiple times. They can duplicate the initial document and customize it accordingly.

  • Leverage Dynamic Forms: Dynamic forms use conditional logic to update form fields based on information that’s populated. For example, if a water heater is tankless, the form automatically updates to display only questions related to tankless water heaters.

ServiceTitan forms are built natively into our product, whereas Housecall Pro is limited to integrations with third party apps such as Google Forms, Paperform, and Forms on Fire.

With our advanced form functionality, businesses can better ensure that techs and office staff follow best practices when executing day-to-day workflows, as well as ensure the right information is documented for every job.
