January is the peak season for water heater replacements
If you install water heaters, you already feel it every winter and the data backs it up. Residential water heater install volume jumps well above the yearly average every January, and it has happened two years running.
The January spike, by the numbers
Using ServiceTitan platform data from residential plumbing contractors, we compared each month’s water heater replacement volume with that year’s monthly average, setting 100 as the baseline for a typical month. January stood out at 118 in 2024 and 124 in 2025, putting install volume 18% to 24% above average.
A smaller secondary increase appears in October, with volume running roughly 2% to 6% above baseline in both years before easing as the holiday season approaches.
What is driving it
The pattern aligns with the coldest part of the year, when stressed tanks and pipes are more prone to failure. While this timing suggests a weather-related replacement cycle, this analysis does not isolate weather as the cause. What is clear, however, is that the surge occurs at approximately the same time each year.
A short lifespan sets up the spike
Water heaters have the shortest median replacement age of any major home system at 11.3 years, based on recent ServiceTitan data. Twenty-five percent are replaced within 6.4 years, while 75% have been replaced by year 16. A significant portion of the customer base is within the replacement window at any given time, and the data suggests January is when that underlying risk most often translates into a service call.
What it means for your business
For plumbing contractors, a predictable January surge is a real planning input for staffing, inventory, and marketing. A few ways to put it to work:
Plan staffing and scheduling for the seasonal peak. January brings the highest demand for water heater installs, so having extra technician capacity and schedule flexibility can help you capture more jobs and avoid losing customers to competitors.
Build inventory before demand spikes. Because the data shows a strong trend, you can secure equipment and parts ahead of the January rush instead of reacting once call volume is already rising.
Align marketing with the replacement cycle. Water heater replacement campaigns and maintenance reminders are likely to be more timely in November and December, just before peak demand, than during the summer months.
Target outreach using equipment age. With a median 11.3-year lifespan, customers whose water heaters are approaching or past that mark are the best candidates for proactive replacement conversations heading into the fall.
