All Within My Hands: Metallica’s Mission to Close the Skilled Labor Gap in the Trades

September 8, 2026

Episode Overview

$100,000. Ten community colleges. That's where a rock band's foundation started in 2019.

Today the number is $19 million, spread across 93 schools and nearly 18,000 students. The growth wasn't the plan — it was the byproduct of a much simpler idea.

"The band knew they wanted to get into education, but it was James who made a real case for the forgotten, the folks who want to learn a trade."

Renee Richardson runs philanthropy for All Within My Hands, the foundation started by Metallica, and she traces the whole thing back to frontman James Hetfield watching his own kids get funneled toward a four-year path that wasn't built for everyone.

"My kids are going through high school right now, and they're being pushed into this four-year academic world where nobody's reminding them that they can be a plumber."

That instinct became the Metallica Scholars Initiative. No music education, no vanity programs — just direct funding to community colleges, tracked by enrollment, completion, and job placement.

"Learning a trade is not second to anything. It is as important as becoming a doctor."

The dollars scaled fast because the partners did. Wolverine co-branded boots. Carhartt donated a full day of sales. ServiceTitan came on after a shared connection at Carhartt made the introduction.

"All of the money that comes into this foundation goes back out into these projects that we do. The band pays all administrative costs."

The foundation's own reach stays lean by design — one full-time employee, a volunteer executive director, and a lot of trust in the schools closest to the jobs.

"We punch way above our weight as a foundation."

The mission hasn't changed since year one, even as the numbers have.

"We're just getting started."

Renee Richardson recently joined Amanda Salvatore on the "Toolbox for the Trades" podcast to discuss:
