The ServiceTitan Certified Technician: Faster Onboarding and Real-World Mastery

September 3, 2026

Episode Overview

Getting a new technician from hire date to revenue-producing can take weeks, and most of that time isn't spent learning the trade — it's spent learning the software. On this episode of Mastering ServiceTitan, host Josh Lu talks with Danielle Combs, Program Manager for Customer and Partner Relations at ServiceTitan, about the newly launched ServiceTitan Certified Technician certification. Combs walks through why the program exists, what it actually covers inside the new Field mobile app, and why it's the first ServiceTitan certification open to people who aren't ServiceTitan users yet. The conversation covers the full ten-section curriculum, the three-level structure, and how to roll it out without losing your technicians' time.

Why ServiceTitan Built a Technician-Specific Certification

Combs has run field teams herself, and she points to the same bottleneck most operators know well: recruiting is hard, and once you've hired someone, getting them comfortable with your systems takes real time away from teaching them your actual business practices. The Certified Technician program was built to compress that ramp-up window.

It's also the first ServiceTitan certification available to people who don't yet use the platform at all — including trade school students who haven't been hired anywhere.

“This is the first time ever we have offered any type of…training within our academy or certification to a non-user,” Combs says.

The logic is straightforward: if a student learns ServiceTitan before they ever apply for a job, your shop becomes more attractive to them the moment they start looking.

“If a technician learns to use a tool they're gonna be more apt to lean towards continuing to use that tool,” Combs says.

That upside cuts both ways. New hires arrive already comfortable with the software, and they've learned it from ServiceTitan directly instead of picking up shortcuts or bad habits at a previous shop.

Inside the Ten-Section Curriculum

The certification is built specifically around the new Field mobile app, so it won't go stale the next time ServiceTitan ships an interface update. Combs and Lu walked through all ten sections, which run from basic navigation through more advanced back-office-adjacent tasks:

  • Job lifecycle and navigation — viewing schedules, dispatching to a job, logging work performed, holding appointments

  • Estimates and proposals — building estimates, flagging good/better/best recommendations, presentation mode

  • Pricebook and item management — adding items, configuring services, using item groups and sub-items

  • Invoicing and payments — reviewing invoice items, verifying tax zones, taking card/ACH payments, sending payment links, financing basics

  • Findings and equipment — attaching findings to estimates, documenting equipment age, duplicating findings across multiple units

  • Forms and documentation — arrival checklists, linking forms to equipment, using conditional logic and smart fields

  • Financing and revenue — selecting financing partners, first look versus second look, attaching financing plans to estimates

  • Memberships and agreements — selling memberships on estimates, marking recurring service complete, selling renewals and add-ons

  • Opportunities and follow-ups — using the mobile follow-ups tab to set reminders and re-contact customers

  • Procurement and inventory — creating purchase orders from a job, adding items, adjusting received quantities, auto-receive

Combs was direct about scope: the certification isn't meant to teach your shop's specific policies. “We're not training your technicians for your shop,” she says. “This is about how to use the system efficiently.”

She also pushed back on the instinct to skip sections your shop doesn't currently use.

“Knowledge is power. It is better for them to know about it and know how to navigate than to not know it and come up against things,” Combs says.

Explorer, Navigator, Commander: How the Levels Work

The certification is structured in three stair-stepped levels, and technicians can't skip ahead. Once someone passes a level, the system automatically assigns the next one — no need to contact your CSM.

  • Explorer — the entry level, focused on locating features and understanding the basics

  • Navigator — the intermediate level, focused on how features work together

  • Commander — the advanced level, covering more intricate workflows like financing, purchase orders, and photo annotation

Combs estimates the full curriculum, taken end to end across all three levels, runs around five to six hours. Technicians who are already seasoned ServiceTitan users can skip straight to the tests without sitting through the training content, though they still have to complete the levels in order.

The testing format is also new. Instead of text-based questions, this certification uses click-through simulations where technicians perform the action directly in the system. It's also the first certification to customize itself by trade — the app asks a technician's primary trade up front, then adjusts screenshots and terminology to match.

“The Pricebook is the heartbeat of your company,” Combs says.

Rolling It Out Without Losing Field Time

Asked whether every technician should take the certification or just power users, Combs recommends flipping the usual instinct. Rather than starting with your best technicians, she suggests starting with whoever struggles most with technology.

“The best way to get buy-in from your team is if you have your technician that struggles the most with technology master it, then there is no reason why everybody can't do it,” Combs says.

On getting managers to model the same standard she's set for the team:

“Never expect your employees to do something you're not willing to do.”

For scheduling it into an already packed week, Combs suggests folding it into time you're already spending with technicians — one-on-ones, weekly team meetings — rather than treating it as an extra task competing for their attention.

“It's better to have somebody prepared for something and…not need to use it than need it and not know what the heck they're doing,” Combs says.
