ServiceTitan Ended Boss Roofing’s ‘Frankenstein of Software.’ Here’s What Happened Next

A few years ago, Brick Boss was fed up with all the different tools it took to run his shop, Boss Roofing-Siding Experts.

There was a tool for scheduling. Another for quoting. There was a vehicle tracking tool, one for time clocks, a separate CRM software and more.

“It was just a mess of data — everywhere,” Boss said.

His biggest pain point? Job costing. Boss never knew if the numbers at his Northern Illinois shop were truly accurate until it was too late.

“It was a ton of manual calculations,” Boss said. “(We had) 10 different softwares — a Frankenstein of software. We (tried) to pull whatever data we could from those to get close to knowing our numbers… and hoped (we could do) the best we could.

“That drove me nuts. We could never figure out job (costing) to a T.”

Boss said this problem kept his shop stuck in reactive mode. He knew Boss Roofing wouldn’t reach its potential without a better tool, one that could house the company’s data in one place instead of 10.

That’s why in October 2024, Boss took the proactive approach and switched to ServiceTitan.

Getting rid of guesswork

Life with ServiceTitan has been easier in the office. Nearly all the tools Boss relies on are in one platform, and job costing – especially labor – is a breeze.

  • Job costing: Before ServiceTitan, nailing down the exact hours spent on a site felt impossible. “Now, we can go into any given job and see exactly how many hours, down to the minute, have been spent on that job,” Boss said.

With accurate data from each site, the team uses customized reports to drill down on problem areas and make adjustments.

“We wouldn't be where we are now (without) knowing our numbers,” Boss said. “Every week we know exactly what jobs are hitting, proper cost, what jobs are not, and then we can dig right in to find out why as well.”

There have been other perks.

  • Onboarding: Onboarding new hires is a piece of cake compared to the days of using 10 different softwares, and Boss loves that he can see how his field staff are performing monthly and yearly.

But mostly, he loves to see his company running more efficiently.

“(Before serviceTitan) every time there was a problem, we were hiring somebody to fix that problem,” he said. “And we just kept hiring people and throwing them at problems. In the end, we realized the system we had was a huge problem.”

Poised for growth

A little more than a year after switching to ServiceTitan, Boss said his team is more proactive about knowing the numbers that matter, and he can’t believe the details at his fingertips.

“You don't have to wait until the end of the year to realize if you did well on a job,” he said.

With down-to-the-penny financial clarity, his outlook for the company has changed – drastically.

  • Revenue Boost: Boss Roofing was doing $14 million in revenue when they joined ServiceTitan. Now, they’re on track for $26 million.

  • Minimal Overhead: Last year, Boss saved $500,000 in unnecessary overhead.

“We're running the same size company, but with probably 50% less overhead,” he said. “Not only are we going to grow, we're going to cut a lot of expenses that, prior to ServiceTitan, could have meant constantly having to add more office staff.”

For Boss, saving money while growing is beyond what he hoped to achieve when he switched platforms.

“(ServiceTitan is) not something you'll ever have to change out of,” he said. “It's built for growth.”
