How Women Influencers Are Changing the Game in the Trades

April 30, 2024

Episode Overview

Kelsey Whittenberg’s social media following is growing. That’s not surprising these days–until you consider she’s an industrial electrician whose TikTok handle is @TheSpicySparkyKelsey.

Her day job is with Weifield Group Contracting, a company she loves. The side gig as an up-and-coming influencer is a chance to show the online world that women can thrive in trade jobs normally held by men.

Whether it’s electrical work or posting videos, Whittenberg says the only way to learn is to try things hands-on–even if you fail at first.

“You have to mess up a lot of times to learn how to do things efficiently and effectively,” she says.

Whittenberg is proud of what her online presence has turned into.

“It's become this platform that has allowed me to have a voice, where I wouldn't get that in other places,” she says.

Her videos are authentic, funny and sassy–but respectful. She’s used the platform to recruit for Weifield as well as to advocate for women in the trades.

Whittenberg has been in the trades for only four years but has already drawn a lot of attention. When it comes to professional advancement, she says no one should be afraid, or feel like they may be in the shadows of others who are more highly skilled.

“Surround yourself with people who are better than you,” she says. “People who motivate you, people who are going to keep you performing on a level that you want to be on.”

That’s what Whittenberg did–and now she teaches apprentices.

It’s highly likely that’ll be the subject of one of her upcoming TikToks.
