How to Empower Your Technicians Beyond Electrical Courses

Courses offer valuable lessons in maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting electrical systems, but the story doesn't end there. Beyond technical skills, your technicians need to master the art of customer interaction and salesmanship. Equipping them with the right tools to automate processes is equally crucial for enhancing productivity.

Apart from conventional courses, consider implementing these additional best practices to empower your technicians.

Arm them with trade-specific technology

A field tech cannot wow customers if they:

  • Carry paper forms or archaic clipboards

  • Always have to call the office to confirm every piece of information and get signoff on invoices

  • Can't spot other challenges a customer has and educate them about the different solutions available

In today's competitive market, being an exceptional electrician requires more than field skills. Customers seek an all-encompassing experience that goes beyond the job itself.

A modern electrician is expected to possess a depth of knowledge and leverage technology to manage tasks efficiently, all while ensuring clients have complete visibility. 70% of customers prefer integrated processes, requiring seamless coordination between the sales, customer relationship, and tech teams.

Furthermore, let's acknowledge the inevitable truth: much like any other sector, the landscape of the electrical industry is undergoing significant transformations. This underscores the necessity of equipping technicians with cutting-edge tools such as electrician applications.

ServiceTitan’s Field Service App is a perfect example of software built with both the tech and the customer.

From the tablet, field techs can access all the customer data support reps collect during intake calls.

This empowers techs to devote more time to the job rather than making back-and-forth calls to the office to confirm details.

Techs can also complete all the necessary forms on their tablet instead of waiting until they reach the office.

You can also set reminders for techs to fill out every form by setting triggers that cause them to appear at specific times of the job cycle.

Ultimately, a technician meets customer expectations by resolving the reported issue, but surpassing these expectations by providing solutions to problems not initially mentioned garners rave reviews.

Recognizing the opportunity to capture opportunities in the field, we've designed tools to empower techs to execute upsell opportunities from the job site.

After identifying an upsell opportunity, the tech needs to convince the customer of the service’s value.

Hence the next tip on this list…

Teach them about sales

Your techs are also your salespeople.

They’re out in the field engaging with the customers, selling them your services, and convincing them to keep booking with you.

For this reason, sales is an important skill your techs should have.

They must be able to communicate with customers and clients to build trust and upsell other services.

But let’s face it: not every tech can communicate value and sell. Besides, most prefer to do their job and leave the job site.

That means it’s not enough to teach them to sell. You must also make it easier for them to sell so they can go out of their way to promote your services to customers.

For example, your price book must be organized. And techs shouldn't have to calculate prices when creating and presenting good-better-best options manually.

That's where ServiceTitan's Pricebook feature comes in.

It ensures your price book is organized using an easy-to-understand interface. This way, techs can easily find, display, and sell services to customers on the job site.

With Pricebook, field techs can:

  • Upload images and videos of damages that need repair and materials included in the estimate

  • Display estimates to customers on an Android, iPhone, or iPad

  • Write a summary of the scope of the work after taking stock of the customer's property

  • Include financing options for high-ticket materials and equipment

This makes it easier for field techs to convince customers to agree to upsells and sign up for ongoing product maintenance.

Cultivate a customer-first mindset

Technicians have direct contact with your customers.

The only way to get positive word of mouth, online reviews, and referrals is to exceed customer expectations.

Train your techs to:

  • Walk the customer through their findings and proposed solutions

  • Resolve customer challenges quickly

  • Go above and beyond the service request

Empowering techs to put customers first and deliver a positive experience starts with equipping them with the best tools.

ServiceTitan’s Customer Experience software makes it easy to ensure your techs go above and beyond for every customer.

For example, this advanced technology allows customers to gain a glimpse into the professional who will be handling their electrical needs, creating a sense of familiarity and trust.

From the technician's name and photo to their expertise and certifications, this pre-arrival information instills confidence and adds a human touch to the service experience.

You can also send appointment reminders via SMS to help keep customers informed throughout the entire process.

It also reduces no-shows and allows the customer to get accustomed to the technician before arrival.

With ServiceTitan's GPS tracking, customers can even see the real-time location of any tech heading their way, assuring them someone's on the way and that they'll arrive on time.
