Managing the Transition: How Acquisitions Help Companies to Grow

February 27, 2024

Episode Overview

Angela Miller considers herself a recovering perfectionist.

“I really believe that perfectionism can get in the way of progress because you're waiting for things to be so perfect that you don't get things executed,” says Miller, VP of Integrations at Goettl Air Conditioning & Plumbing.

At Goettl, it’s her job to communicate with teams that have been acquired by the home-services industry giant.

She often encounters trepidation from new employees. Her goals are to explain the benefits of mergers and to build trust with the workforces.

“There's always an opportunity that you didn't anticipate, and being able to pivot off of those to capture that is important,” Miller says.

She points out the strength in numbers. And that teams can achieve goals and improve bottom line by benefitting from experience that comes from having a lot of smart minds that work in IT, marketing and management.

Miller knows that change is difficult and people generally don’t enjoy disruption from old systems.

That’s why she works hard to build trust.

“Trust is key in any relationship, whether it's with integrations or within your own team,” she says.

Every employee, especially techs who have relationships with customers, is a valuable asset whose views will be heard and respected.

The self-admitted recovering perfectionist has learned to listen and be flexible. Her job, she says, is to integrate, not to change every company to operate in exactly the same way.

“Maybe [Goettl] has a little bit more purchasing power,” Miller says. “But [we] can still learn from people that have done things a little bit differently.”

That would seem to be the perfect approach.
