Grow Out of Your Seat: Scaling Leadership Opportunities in Your Business

June 6, 2023

Episode Overview

Alyssa Rogers revels in being the “hype woman” for Rogers Heating & Cooling

There’s much to promote and plenty to be proud of: In five years, the company grew from three employees to 32–and boosted sales tenfold.

She’s vice president of the family business she and her husband, Joey, run in the small town of South Boston, Virginia. Alyssa is also the biggest booster and most enthusiastic supporter of her homegrown team.

“It's an honor to have these people surrounding us,” she says. “And so is getting to see their smiling faces every day. It’s just really amazing for me in helping them achieve their goals.”

Rogers preaches the practice of helping people “grow out of their seat.”

Just what does that mean? It represents a process of setting goals for employees and advancing up the company ladder. This applies to everybody–even if you enter the company with no previous trade experience.

“I want everyone to know that they need to open up opportunities to others,” Rogers says. “Almost our entire leadership team came here with zero experience in the trades. And here we are three years later, some of them are leading departments.”

Growing out of one’s seat goes hand in hand with a collaborative process that’s in place at Rogers Heating & Cooling.

“We have to surround ourselves with people that know more than we do so we can grow,” Rogers says. “Then we need to make sure that we're sharing that with our team and providing them the opportunities to grow. I don't always see that in the corporate world.”

Rogers views employment at her workplace as more than just joining a company. Rather, it’s more like joining a movement. She’s emphatic that assisting people with little or no experience is a recipe for success.

And she’s more than happy to share her recipe.

Alyssa Rogers recently joined ServiceTitan’s Jackie Aubel as part of Season 8 of the “Toolbox for the Trades” podcast, which included Rogers’ thoughts on:
